 Mercury Program

The District's Water Quality and Industrial Surveillance Department administers the Mercury Reduction Program. The District has been required by its discharge permit to limit the amount of mercury that can be allowed into the sewer system from non-domestic sources.

Using the most sensitive analytical methods, mercury can be detected in virtually all sources of water in the sewer system. For this reason, the District is instituting a requirement that all non-residential sources of mercury must implement Best Management Practices (BMPs) to minimize the amount of mercury discharged. These non-residential sources include many local industries, dental facilities, hospitals, and many others.

If you have questions or are interested in more information, contact the District's Mercury Program at mercuryprogram@neorsd.org.
